Shorthorn Shots of the Week 4/24

This week was an extremely slow news week. I probably feel this way due to sports withdrawal since my only shot at shooting tennis this week was squashed because of information error. O well. I did have a great time shooting the Muslim Students Association’s Islam Awareness Week festivities on Tuesday. It was definitely one of those educational assignments. MSA set up a tent outside of the Central Library to engage with the campus and show off the “real Islam”. I think the captions and images tell the rest of the story so I’ll let them speak for me. Enjoy.

Shorthorn Shots of the Week 4/16

This week was definitely a test of my patience. We had a lot of speaker stories that were just creatively stifling. Other than that the rest of the week was pretty good. I shot a portrait of Clinton Rawls, one of the first graduates to take part in the MFA Exhibitions at UTA, who will be showing his film and video work. He was very interesting to talk to and it turns out that we both have similar views that are expressed in our respective artistic work. Baseball seems like it will be the main sport for the rest of the semester so I am really trying to take advantage of the time to improve. As much as I love basketball, baseball is intriguing because it has been so difficult for me to shoot lately but the only way to improve is to shooting. After an hour of baseball, I had to run over to the Eric O’Shea comedy show. It was the last show of the One Mic Stand comedy series. O’Shea was definitely an interesting act and he had great improv abilities as he took jabs at the crowd throughout the show. On Thursday I had a great portrait session with graduating senior guard Marquez Haynes for Graduation Issue. I will put those up in a separate post after I'm done editing. Until then, enjoy.

Shorthorn Shots of the Week 4/9

This week I shot a little bit of everything from huge maps of proposed bike trails to a day without shoes with a little of my usual sports thrown in for good measure. I started the week by revisiting an old shoot I did with the African Percussion Ensemble to promote a story about the director starting a study abroad program to Africa. On Wednesday, a conference room in Arlington City Hall was packed full of people eager to see the new proposal maps for hiking and biking trails that will extend throughout Arlington if passed. The plans will also feature some much needed safety measures for bicyclists by creating new bike lanes on frequently traveled streets. Thursday was an interesting day. An assignment fell through and at the last minute I picked up the story of the UTA Volunteers hosting their first One Day Without Shoes march through campus. The march was part of global effort by TOMS Shoes to raise awareness the hardships that face children in developing countries without shoes. My usual sports pictures are of baseball and tennis, two sports that I am still trying to get the hang of. Now off to focus on some schoolwork and whatever next week brings. Enjoy.

Shorthorn Shots of the Week 4/2

It was an exciting week to shoot. My Package on the soon to be official UTA Parkour Club ran this week with an extended cutline (mini-story), stills and a video. I also had a pretty good shoot as the Mavericks baseball team took on TCU. My timing was on and I didn't have a lot of shots with people in the way so I was happy. To end the week, the 29th Annual Bed Races finally took place after being postponed last semester due to inclement weather. Less people showed up than usual but it was still a fun even. I got another chance to do a stills and video combo that I'm pretty happy with. Enjoy.

Temple and Belton Boys Soccer 3/26

This post is a bit late but better late than never for the first real soccer shoot I've had. I shot the Temple and Belton boys soccer teams during the area-round playoffs in Garland. I got used to it pretty quick considering I don't know much about how the sport works. Overall, it was a great experience and hopefully I can shoot more in the future to expand my skill set.

Shorthorn Shots of the Week 3/30

This belated entry comes after an extremely busy week full of wild art and last minute assignments. It was a good week overall and I even learned a few things. This is going to be short since I still have a backlog of photos to go through including the wedding and my parkour package that will be in the next installment of Shots of the Week. I also shot high school boys soccer for the first time for the Temple Daily Telegram so look for a post on that soon. Enjoy.

After a 20-year disc jockey career, interdisciplinary studies senior David Kenoly will be co-hosting a new talk show on CNN Radio called “On the D. L. with Lane and Dave” starting Monday at 6 p.m. Kenoly and co-host Lane Clark will discuss a wide range of topics from two sides of the political, social and religious spectrum. One topic during the kick-off show will be a discussion titled “Would You Kill Your Child’s Molestor”. (The Shorthorn: Andrew Buckley)

Shorthorn Shots of the Week 3/17

This all basketball edition of Shots of the Week comes after a disappointing end to the men's and women's seasons during the Southland Conference Tournament last week in Katy, Texas. The men didn't make it past the first round and the women were knocked out in the second round by Lamar. This year we really wanted to push more online content so for every game I produced stills, galleries and video to supplement our print edition. It was more work than i originally thought and required some adapting but I learned alot from the experience overall. Well, it's spring break so I'm going to go back to thinking about upcoming projects and relaxing before getting back to the daily grind next week.

Shorthorn Shots of the Week 3/6

Last week was an unusually lucky week for me with wildart, or features in some circles. I met alot of interesting people around campus and overall felt pretty good about what I was shooting. It seems like the great weather we've been having lately got everybody out and enjoying the campus a little more. I'm still trying to figure out baseball, not my forte when it comes to sports photography, but I feel like I'm progressing game by game. I shot the Military Science Hall of Honor induction ceremony and experienced the dedication that many ex-Mavericks have to they're military duties. Keeping with experiencing new things, I'm trying to do more video for The Shorthorn and had the opportunity to shoot the Special Events Center Groundbreaking on Friday. It was the first time I really got to shoot with my 5D and 7D side by side. Overall it was a great experience and I look forward to using this versatile setup in the future. This coming week I will be covering the Southland Conference Basketball Tournament in Katy, Texas, so check out theshorthorn.com for updates on my basketball work daily. Hopefully, if all the equipment cooperates, there will be some multimedia to go with the images featuring the seniors of both teams. Stay tuned.

Shorthorn Shots of the Week 2/26

This week, the men's basketball team was frontpage news as senior guard Marquez Haynes broke the UTA single season scoring record of 599 with 605 points as of Wednesday night. After only scoring one point in the first half, Haynes helped push the the Mavericks into the lead with 20 points in the second half. Homecoming week has also taken over UTA. The annual Homecoming Golf Cart Parade snaked its way through campus with 34 organizations participating in the event that included a pep rally and canon firing. I also covered the rehearsal of the percussion ensemble they prepared for their annual Spring Chamber Music Concert. The ensemble used a variety of traditional african drums and bells that really made for a lively shoot.

Shorthorn Shots of the Week 2/20

News came at a slow pace this week so sports filled the gap for this post. Men's basketball is continuing their push for wins before the Southland Conference Tournament in March. Their convincing win over Southeastern Louisiana shows exactly what can happen if the team plays as one and doesn't rely on Haynes to pull it out in the second half. The baseball team also had its home opener on Friday, facing off against Dallas Baptist University. After an early lead, the Mavericks' gave up a few home runs late in the game and could not recover. I also shot some tennis, which hasn't happened in years. I think I got some good shots considering I don't know the sport that well.
