Shorthorn Shots of the Week 9/24

This week I worked on an event for Hispanic Heritage Month at UTA called Celebrando la Vida meaning "Celebrate Life". The performance exhibited dances from different states in Mexico and Latin America while giving the audience background in the the cultures history. I did a quick video to give viewers a taste of the performance and shot stills alongside one of our new photographers so I could give him some tips along the way. Enjoy.

Shorthorn Shots 4/25

Things seem to get busier and busier as the semester starts to wind down in the final two weeks. I'll make this short and sweet since my mind is fried after writing an eight page critical analysis of Full Metal Jacket. First, I did a short chess video of the two-time UTA chess champion playing 11 players at once to help attract players to the UTA Chess Club. Next up is a group of students, faculty and alumni that went to the WFAA studio in Dallas to promote the Big Event on the Daybreak Morning show. Then we have a little sports action leading into the Koi Koi House orphanage project as part of the Big Event philanthropy event at UTA. Volunteers painted shirts for the Ugandan children at the orphanage and learned more about its mission. Overall, it was an interesting series of assignments that challenged me adapt to various story angles. Enjoy.

Maverick Chess Club Tournament

One of FLOC’s projects at the event was to write letters or create greetings cards for the children who live at the Koi Koi House. Victoria Farrar-Myers, FLOC faculty advisor, will be traveling to Uganda this summer and will hand deliver them to the children. (The Shorthorn: Andrew Buckley)

Shorthorn Shots 3/18

This is just a small update of some recent things I've shot over the past few weeks. First up is the College Park Center construction tour. The new arena at UTA is finally taking shape and we went inside for an update on its progress. I also had a few opportunities to shoot some baseball as the Mavericks begin their season. College Park Center Tour

The College Park Center is about 30 percent complete and is on schedule to be completed in December according to UT System senior project manager Bill Amendola. Finishing touches, such as the removable wooden floor of the basketball court, will be put in around October. (The Shorthorn: Andrew Buckley)

Shorthorn Shots of the Week 9/11

Yet another hectic week balancing school and work. This is also the first week in what seems like an eternity that I have not shot a video but focused more on stills. Labor Day and torrential rain made for an interesting week none the less. Let us all remember what happened on this day in history and I'll let the pictures speak for themselves, enjoy.

Junior outside hitter Eld-hah Kawatuka has shown her ability to adapt to any situation both on and off the court in her two years at UTA after coming to America from the Congo when she was eight. This season, Kaswatuka is averaging a team-high 3.04 kills per set and 2.04 digs per set. (The Shorthorn: Andrew Buckley)

2010 Texas Autocross Weekend

Over the weekend, UTA hosted the annual Texas Autocross Weekend on July 10 and 11 where 35 cars from 14 different universities from all over the United States and Canada came to race their student built Formula SAE cars against the clock. This event was for bragging rights and let the teams trade rides without the pressure of a formal competition. There was also a bit of excitement off the track as a 1965 Ford Cobra flew into the creek across the street from where the races were being held. Life lesson for the kids: Showboating just brings a waterlogged ride and embarrassment for a lifetime. Enjoy.

Shorthorn Wild Art Hunt

My first video shot and edited fully with iMovie on the iPhone 4. This was a training session we did to encourage everyone to get out of the office and find out what's going on around campus at any given time. It was hot but I think everyone learned a lot. It was really interesting using the iPhone as a full capture/edit platform. I hope Apple continues to update iMovie with more transitions and options to allow more user control to bring it closer to the capabilities of the desktop version.

Shorthorn Shots of the Week 4/9

This week I shot a little bit of everything from huge maps of proposed bike trails to a day without shoes with a little of my usual sports thrown in for good measure. I started the week by revisiting an old shoot I did with the African Percussion Ensemble to promote a story about the director starting a study abroad program to Africa. On Wednesday, a conference room in Arlington City Hall was packed full of people eager to see the new proposal maps for hiking and biking trails that will extend throughout Arlington if passed. The plans will also feature some much needed safety measures for bicyclists by creating new bike lanes on frequently traveled streets. Thursday was an interesting day. An assignment fell through and at the last minute I picked up the story of the UTA Volunteers hosting their first One Day Without Shoes march through campus. The march was part of global effort by TOMS Shoes to raise awareness the hardships that face children in developing countries without shoes. My usual sports pictures are of baseball and tennis, two sports that I am still trying to get the hang of. Now off to focus on some schoolwork and whatever next week brings. Enjoy.

Shorthorn Shots of the Week 2/14

This is going to be a combo post with selections from two weeks at The Shorthorn. It's been a busy two weeks between school, The Shorthorn, my first wedding (pictures to come soon) and working security at NBA All-Star events around DFW. We also had record breaking snowfall in the area, 12.5 inches, that contributed to the madness. KC Hall hosted a kickboxing class to promote activities at the MAC. As the men's and women's basketball seasons come closer to the Southland Conference Tournament, both teams are pushing for position in the standings. I'm a bit behind of updating the blog but hopefully I will have more time in the coming weeks. Enjoy.
