Shorthorn Shots of the Week 9/14

Shots of the Week is back with a BANG for my final semester at The Shorthorn! Blogger now allows larger pictures! I'm Photo Editor again so my focus is trying to get my photographers the most experience I can while I continuously learn about how to be a good manager. This week I'm starting off with a video of UTA's new music for the alma mater being performed by its creator. Luckily he was patient enough to play through it a few times since I didn't realize how hard it would be to create a basic music video. Next are some shots from the end of the Midtown saga that involved about 200 students being displaced for the first couple of weeks of class because the apartment complex was not complete. Needless to say, everyone was happy to finally be home. Finally, this wasn't a huge story but I just thought this photo was interesting aesthetically. Enjoy.

New Alma Mater

Shorthorn Shots 4/25

Things seem to get busier and busier as the semester starts to wind down in the final two weeks. I'll make this short and sweet since my mind is fried after writing an eight page critical analysis of Full Metal Jacket. First, I did a short chess video of the two-time UTA chess champion playing 11 players at once to help attract players to the UTA Chess Club. Next up is a group of students, faculty and alumni that went to the WFAA studio in Dallas to promote the Big Event on the Daybreak Morning show. Then we have a little sports action leading into the Koi Koi House orphanage project as part of the Big Event philanthropy event at UTA. Volunteers painted shirts for the Ugandan children at the orphanage and learned more about its mission. Overall, it was an interesting series of assignments that challenged me adapt to various story angles. Enjoy.

Shorthorn Shots 4/3

Sports dominates this post as I brushed up on my tennis skills and produced a recap video after the Mavericks took on the #5 ranked Aggies in baseball. I have never shot video for baseball before but I learned a lot from the experience and thought of a few editing ideas if I have to again in the future. Enjoy.

Shorthorn Shots 3/18

This is just a small update of some recent things I've shot over the past few weeks. First up is the College Park Center construction tour. The new arena at UTA is finally taking shape and we went inside for an update on its progress. I also had a few opportunities to shoot some baseball as the Mavericks begin their season. College Park Center Tour

The College Park Center is about 30 percent complete and is on schedule to be completed in December according to UT System senior project manager Bill Amendola. Finishing touches, such as the removable wooden floor of the basketball court, will be put in around October. (The Shorthorn: Andrew Buckley)

Shorthorn Shots 2/20

Since my posts now come at random intervals instead of weekly, this will be the first Shorthorn Shots post. Being the Photo Editor takes a lot of time away from shooting but it does help me focus on quality when I do get the opportunity to pick up a camera. Last week, we had Tiger of Bengal, an experimental band based out of D-FW, come in and perform in the middle of the newsroom. It was definitely an interesting and unique way to experience this local band. Then we have some shots from one of the most exciting games i've seen played by the current mens basketball team. They were behind 15 points then came back to win in overtime by one with record breaking crowd of over 1,000 going wild. Enjoy.

Shorthorn Shots of the Week 2/5

This semester has definitely started off with a bang. A week and a half before school started, I was given the Photo Editor position due to unforeseen circumstances. Unfortunately, this is the reason for Shots of the Week to come on a not so weekly basis. The good thing about it is that I have the opportunity to train a whole new generation of motivated Shorthorn photographers. Hopefully as the semester continues and the new photographers grow, I will have more time to shoot and just manage. With that, on to the shots. First up are a few shots that did not run in print but were just interesting in relation to campus life at UTA. This hawk has stalked squirrels on campus for some time and this was my first opportunity to catch it in action as a crowd looked on. In other news, the DFW area just braved what many have been calling snowmageddon and some of my favorite shots have come from what the campus looked like during this time. Myself, one of my staff and a few other Shorthorners tackled the weather to give the community a vision what was happening at UTA. The weather did not detour the Movin' Mavs from having practice as ice covered most of campus as they prepared for the upcoming tournament over the weekend. Until next time, enjoy.

Shorthorn Shots of the Week 10/24

Another week of challenges at The Shorthorn has past and I'm getting ready for more. I still can't get used to our new production schedule but it does have its benefits at times. This week, I explored local parks for outdoor activities, listened to a celebrity chef talk about his inspirations, tried to capture "Red Fever" and finally got a coach to smile. I was working on a LARPing, or live action role playing, story with a video for next week but huge storms on Saturday rained us out. I'm trying to pace myself with video since I somewhat burned myself out a bit at the beginning of the semester and I am trying to focus on quality over quantity. Until next week, enjoy.

Shorthorn Shots of the Week 10/17

I know I say it every week, but it always seems to be a random week. A little bit of everything from The Shorthorn and even had time to do a little personal project on the side. In my Printmaking class, we have been making hand-made paper. My personal opinion is that it is numbingly boring so I decided to make a short video of the experience that is hopefully a bit more exciting. The whole video is made with my GoPro HD camera and allowed for some very unique angles. I'm looking to incorporate it in an upcoming video about LARPing for a Shorthorn feature. Arlington’s revenue from Super Bowl XLV at Cowboy’s Stadium is estimated to be about $135,024,983 with most of the total coming from restaurants, alcohol, entertainment and retail.
