Shorthorn Shots of the Week 10/10

Another crazy busy week at The Shorthorn with that always stressful dash of school in the mix. It was a good week overall and now that internship deadlines are coming up I'm aiming for quality over quantity in the photo department. Met a lot of interesting people and am looking forward to finding some on campus to highlight as soon as there is a break in my course load. Gotta love how school always seems to get in the way of career creativity, but thats the art program for you. Well I will let the images speak for themselves this week, enjoy.

Freshman cross-country runner Emily Koenig has produced surprising results for her first year at UTA by winning two of the team’s first three meets so far this season. Head Coach John Sauerhage said that her success thus far is “unprecedented” because they have not had anyone on the team hardly win any cross-country meets besides the conference championship. Tom Jones, owner of Tom’s Burgers & Grill located off of Cooper Street, uses grass roots marketing to gain attention for his business by contributing to the community and word-of-mouth advertising. Jones said that their current promotion on Monday nights is that 10 percent of sales will be donated to First United Methodist Church in Arlington towards appliances for a needy family. Shorthorn Shots of the Week 8/29

Shorthorn Shots of the Week is back! It feels like the most hectic "Welcome Week" I've had at The Shorthorn so far. We are making a big push for video and other multimedia content this semester and it should definitely be interesting going forward. First off, I shot a video of Welcome Week's annual Waffleopolis event where students can come together and have a waffle dinner with new friends. Next, and probably the most personally satisfying, was our coverage of UTA's Extensive Green Roof project. It was a great opportunity and was less hectic than my usual assignments. Last but not lest, I covered the Movin' Mavs annual Back to School Alumni Game where graduates came back to coach current players in a "Blue vs. White" game to show off their roster to the new student body. This semester has already started with a bang and I'm looking forward to the surprises/challenges that will be sure to come up in the future.

Sarah and Johnathan Hill's Wedding

These are some shots from my first wedding shoot back in February. It was a great learning experience and really tested me in adapting to any situation. Wedding mood lighting can be torture on a photographer. All in all, it was a fun experience and I hope to continue to shoot more weddings and develop a strong portfolio in the future.

Shorthorn Wild Art Hunt

My first video shot and edited fully with iMovie on the iPhone 4. This was a training session we did to encourage everyone to get out of the office and find out what's going on around campus at any given time. It was hot but I think everyone learned a lot. It was really interesting using the iPhone as a full capture/edit platform. I hope Apple continues to update iMovie with more transitions and options to allow more user control to bring it closer to the capabilities of the desktop version.

Lake Eufaula Video

I see every weekend vacation this summer as another chance to practice and learn from experience. This is a perfect example of shooting with what was available in front of me with only natural light in less than perfect conditions. I had a great time over the weekend and through the editing process.

Lake Eufaula Preview

This past weekend I finally got a taste of the great outdoors and got away from Arlington for a much needed mini-vacation. A friend of my moms invited us to spend the weekend on a houseboat that they had as part of a timeshare at Lake Eufaula, Oklahoma. We didn’t see a drop of the predicted rain all weekend and it was beautiful. The wildlife was great and I even did some shooting for an upcoming Macro video. I wish we could have stayed longer but work was calling us back to the city. Here are a few photos from the trip and a video is coming as soon as I can find some time between work and other personal projects. The baby geese at the end are a “palette cleanser” for those who don’t like our six-legged friends. Enjoy.

Belton and Temple College Baseball

This week is dominated by baseball freelancing. While everything at The Shorthorn is starting up for the summer, I’ve been shooting Belton High School and Temple College baseball during their post-season runs for the Temple Daily Telegram. It has been great shooting these teams to get more baseball experience in blazing sun and pouring rain alike. I’m definitely starting to get the hang of positioning myself around the field for certain shots but sometimes you just can’t help where something happens. Here are some shots from the first four games this week and will post more when I hopefully shoot Belton and, hopefully, Temple College again later this week.

Shorthorn Shots of the Week 4/9

This week I shot a little bit of everything from huge maps of proposed bike trails to a day without shoes with a little of my usual sports thrown in for good measure. I started the week by revisiting an old shoot I did with the African Percussion Ensemble to promote a story about the director starting a study abroad program to Africa. On Wednesday, a conference room in Arlington City Hall was packed full of people eager to see the new proposal maps for hiking and biking trails that will extend throughout Arlington if passed. The plans will also feature some much needed safety measures for bicyclists by creating new bike lanes on frequently traveled streets. Thursday was an interesting day. An assignment fell through and at the last minute I picked up the story of the UTA Volunteers hosting their first One Day Without Shoes march through campus. The march was part of global effort by TOMS Shoes to raise awareness the hardships that face children in developing countries without shoes. My usual sports pictures are of baseball and tennis, two sports that I am still trying to get the hang of. Now off to focus on some schoolwork and whatever next week brings. Enjoy.

Temple and Belton Boys Soccer 3/26

This post is a bit late but better late than never for the first real soccer shoot I've had. I shot the Temple and Belton boys soccer teams during the area-round playoffs in Garland. I got used to it pretty quick considering I don't know much about how the sport works. Overall, it was a great experience and hopefully I can shoot more in the future to expand my skill set.
