Shorthorn Shots of the Week 2/5

This semester has definitely started off with a bang. A week and a half before school started, I was given the Photo Editor position due to unforeseen circumstances. Unfortunately, this is the reason for Shots of the Week to come on a not so weekly basis. The good thing about it is that I have the opportunity to train a whole new generation of motivated Shorthorn photographers. Hopefully as the semester continues and the new photographers grow, I will have more time to shoot and just manage. With that, on to the shots. First up are a few shots that did not run in print but were just interesting in relation to campus life at UTA. This hawk has stalked squirrels on campus for some time and this was my first opportunity to catch it in action as a crowd looked on. In other news, the DFW area just braved what many have been calling snowmageddon and some of my favorite shots have come from what the campus looked like during this time. Myself, one of my staff and a few other Shorthorners tackled the weather to give the community a vision what was happening at UTA. The weather did not detour the Movin' Mavs from having practice as ice covered most of campus as they prepared for the upcoming tournament over the weekend. Until next time, enjoy.

Shorthorn Shots of the Week 10/24

Another week of challenges at The Shorthorn has past and I'm getting ready for more. I still can't get used to our new production schedule but it does have its benefits at times. This week, I explored local parks for outdoor activities, listened to a celebrity chef talk about his inspirations, tried to capture "Red Fever" and finally got a coach to smile. I was working on a LARPing, or live action role playing, story with a video for next week but huge storms on Saturday rained us out. I'm trying to pace myself with video since I somewhat burned myself out a bit at the beginning of the semester and I am trying to focus on quality over quantity. Until next week, enjoy.

Shorthorn Shots of the Week 9/11

Yet another hectic week balancing school and work. This is also the first week in what seems like an eternity that I have not shot a video but focused more on stills. Labor Day and torrential rain made for an interesting week none the less. Let us all remember what happened on this day in history and I'll let the pictures speak for themselves, enjoy.

Junior outside hitter Eld-hah Kawatuka has shown her ability to adapt to any situation both on and off the court in her two years at UTA after coming to America from the Congo when she was eight. 2010 Texas Autocross Weekend

Over the weekend, UTA hosted the annual Texas Autocross Weekend on July 10 and 11 where 35 cars from 14 different universities from all over the United States and Canada came to race their student built Formula SAE cars against the clock. This event was for bragging rights and let the teams trade rides without the pressure of a formal competition. There was also a bit of excitement off the track as a 1965 Ford Cobra flew into the creek across the street from where the races were being held. Life lesson for the kids: Showboating just brings a waterlogged ride and embarrassment for a lifetime. Enjoy.

Shorthorn Shots of the Week 4/9

This week I shot a little bit of everything from huge maps of proposed bike trails to a day without shoes with a little of my usual sports thrown in for good measure. I started the week by revisiting an old shoot I did with the African Percussion Ensemble to promote a story about the director starting a study abroad program to Africa. On Wednesday, a conference room in Arlington City Hall was packed full of people eager to see the new proposal maps for hiking and biking trails that will extend throughout Arlington if passed. The plans will also feature some much needed safety measures for bicyclists by creating new bike lanes on frequently traveled streets. Thursday was an interesting day. An assignment fell through and at the last minute I picked up the story of the UTA Volunteers hosting their first One Day Without Shoes march through campus. The march was part of global effort by TOMS Shoes to raise awareness the hardships that face children in developing countries without shoes. My usual sports pictures are of baseball and tennis, two sports that I am still trying to get the hang of. Now off to focus on some schoolwork and whatever next week brings. Enjoy.

Shorthorn Shots of the Week 3/17

This all basketball edition of Shots of the Week comes after a disappointing end to the men's and women's seasons during the Southland Conference Tournament last week in Katy, Texas. The men didn't make it past the first round and the women were knocked out in the second round by Lamar. This year we really wanted to push more online content so for every game I produced stills, galleries and video to supplement our print edition. It was more work than i originally thought and required some adapting but I learned alot from the experience overall. Well, it's spring break so I'm going to go back to thinking about upcoming projects and relaxing before getting back to the daily grind next week.

Shorthorn Shots of the Week 3/6

Last week was an unusually lucky week for me with wildart, or features in some circles. I met alot of interesting people around campus and overall felt pretty good about what I was shooting. It seems like the great weather we've been having lately got everybody out and enjoying the campus a little more. I'm still trying to figure out baseball, not my forte when it comes to sports photography, but I feel like I'm progressing game by game. I shot the Military Science Hall of Honor induction ceremony and experienced the dedication that many ex-Mavericks have to they're military duties. Keeping with experiencing new things, I'm trying to do more video for The Shorthorn and had the opportunity to shoot the Special Events Center Groundbreaking on Friday. It was the first time I really got to shoot with my 5D and 7D side by side. Overall it was a great experience and I look forward to using this versatile setup in the future. This coming week I will be covering the Southland Conference Basketball Tournament in Katy, Texas, so check out theshorthorn.com for updates on my basketball work daily.
