HS Baseball: Cameron Yoe vs Bishop

Last week I had another opportunity to shoot some high school baseball for the Temple Daily Telegram in San Antonio. Freelancing down here is a welcome surprise and a boost to my bank account since the internship I am at is unpaid. Cameron Yoe had a pretty bad loss to Bishop in Game 1 but made a great comeback to win the series in Game 2 and 3. The most memorable part of this series was Bishop's shortstop who had obviously been practicing to tag out a baserunner while leaping over him as he attempted the play twice in Game 2. America's pastime always has something new in store. Enjoy.

Shorthorn Shots 4/25

Things seem to get busier and busier as the semester starts to wind down in the final two weeks. I'll make this short and sweet since my mind is fried after writing an eight page critical analysis of Full Metal Jacket. First, I did a short chess video of the two-time UTA chess champion playing 11 players at once to help attract players to the UTA Chess Club. Next up is a group of students, faculty and alumni that went to the WFAA studio in Dallas to promote the Big Event on the Daybreak Morning show. Then we have a little sports action leading into the Koi Koi House orphanage project as part of the Big Event philanthropy event at UTA. Volunteers painted shirts for the Ugandan children at the orphanage and learned more about its mission. Overall, it was an interesting series of assignments that challenged me adapt to various story angles. Enjoy.

Shorthorn Shots 4/3

Sports dominates this post as I brushed up on my tennis skills and produced a recap video after the Mavericks took on the #5 ranked Aggies in baseball. I have never shot video for baseball before but I learned a lot from the experience and thought of a few editing ideas if I have to again in the future. Enjoy.

Shorthorn Shots 3/18

This is just a small update of some recent things I've shot over the past few weeks. First up is the College Park Center construction tour. The new arena at UTA is finally taking shape and we went inside for an update on its progress. I also had a few opportunities to shoot some baseball as the Mavericks begin their season. College Park Center Tour

The College Park Center is about 30 percent complete and is on schedule to be completed in December according to UT System senior project manager Bill Amendola. Finishing touches, such as the removable wooden floor of the basketball court, will be put in around October. (The Shorthorn: Andrew Buckley)

Shorthorn Shots of the Week 10/31

This week was definitely more challenging logistically rather than technically. Schedules didn't come together and good stories were hard to find. Overall pretty frustrating but there were some bright spots. I had to opportunity to cover the museum opening of Lost Egypt: Ancient Secrets, Modern Science, an exhibit in Fort Worth where visitors learn how modern science is used to study mummies and the culture of ancient Egypt. I wasn't planning on doing a video but once I was there I thought it needed more than just a couple of pictures in the paper to show what the exhibit had to offer. The rest of the week was spent mostly trying to set up shoots for the upcoming basketball preview. I'm definitely looking forward to putting out some quality work next week with the preview and a profile piece that I'm hoping will work out Monday. Happy Halloween!

Lost Egypt: Ancient Egypt, Modern Science Video

Belton Tigers Advance to Semifinals

Belton has yet again swept another playoff series. They beat Richardson Lake Highlands 5-1 on Saturday advancing them to the Class 5A Region II semifinals at Sam Houston State. The game was tied 1-1 in the fifth before Belton rallied after a walk off home run in sixth inning to take out the Wildcats in Game 2 of the series. This may be the last of my baseball posts for awhile since both teams I have been covering are going out of town as the continue. I’m hoping to start experimenting with some video projects soon so stay tuned.

Belton and Temple College Baseball

This week is dominated by baseball freelancing. While everything at The Shorthorn is starting up for the summer, I’ve been shooting Belton High School and Temple College baseball during their post-season runs for the Temple Daily Telegram. It has been great shooting these teams to get more baseball experience in blazing sun and pouring rain alike. I’m definitely starting to get the hang of positioning myself around the field for certain shots but sometimes you just can’t help where something happens. Here are some shots from the first four games this week and will post more when I hopefully shoot Belton and, hopefully, Temple College again later this week.

Belton vs Desoto Baseball

I had another opportunity today to shoot the Belton Tigers vs Desoto Eagles in Game 2 of their Class 5A bi-district series for The Temple Daily Telegram. From the beginning it was apparent that these teams were in different classes. Belton swept the series with a 11-0 victory in five innings today to top their 8-0 win in Game 1. This win brings their record to 29-6 as they continue in the playoffs.

Shorthorn Shots of the Week 4/9

This week I shot a little bit of everything from huge maps of proposed bike trails to a day without shoes with a little of my usual sports thrown in for good measure. I started the week by revisiting an old shoot I did with the African Percussion Ensemble to promote a story about the director starting a study abroad program to Africa. On Wednesday, a conference room in Arlington City Hall was packed full of people eager to see the new proposal maps for hiking and biking trails that will extend throughout Arlington if passed. The plans will also feature some much needed safety measures for bicyclists by creating new bike lanes on frequently traveled streets. Thursday was an interesting day. An assignment fell through and at the last minute I picked up the story of the UTA Volunteers hosting their first One Day Without Shoes march through campus. The march was part of global effort by TOMS Shoes to raise awareness the hardships that face children in developing countries without shoes. My usual sports pictures are of baseball and tennis, two sports that I am still trying to get the hang of. Now off to focus on some schoolwork and whatever next week brings. Enjoy.
